Abu Dhabi International Airport - Terminal 3
Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) opened the new Terminal 3 Abu Dhabi International Airport in the first quarter of 2009. The impressive new building is located next to Terminal 1 and has increased the airport’s overall annual passenger capacity to 12 million passengers.
The terminal is dedicated to Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the UAE, and has been fully operational since the end of January 2009. ADAC and Etihad are currently staging the implementation of a flight transition programme for the majority of Etihad’s flights from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3.
The terminal’s phased opening strategy, which started in the last quarter of 2008, has seen flights using the gate facilities from October 2008 with passengers on selected flights checked in as normal in Terminals 1 and 1A, and then boarded via bus to the departure gate at Terminal 3, adjacent to T1. Arrivals have been welcomed into the new Terminal since December 2008. In January 2009, ADAC and Etihad Airways also began trials for arriving and connecting passengers using different aircraft types.
This approach is designed to ensure that ADAC can meet the needs of the passengers using the airport whilst retaining the highest possible levels of customer service and health & safety standards. The phased approach mitigates risk and ensures that all operations and facilities are in full working order.
The terminal building houses new Etihad lounges and features an exclusive concierge style check-in, creating a premium travel experience for passengers. The unique retail offering at Abu Dhabi International Airport’s third terminal is managed by DFS, the world’s largest leading luxury retailer, and features luxury brands and products never before available in the UAE. The retail offering is complemented by a variety of high quality restaurants and cafes.
Terminal 3 is part of ADAC’s AED 25 billion development programme for Abu Dhabi International Airport, to meet the projected increase in business and leisure traffic, the growth of Etihad and the demand from other airlines wishing to fly into Abu Dhabi. The new terminal 3 together with other developments at Abu Dhabi Airport including the second runway, new ATC tower and the Midfield Terminal Complex which is due for completion in 2012, form part of ADAC’s larger plan of expansion that is helping Abu Dhabi International Airport to become a leading world class airport and a gateway connecting the east and west.
Construction of a new multi storey car park is expected to be complete in May 2009.
